As the winter season rolls around and the temperatures start to drop, it is time to make some big landscaping decisions. How do we know what the best decision for our yard will be? If individuals do not act before the worst of the weather, the lawn can suffer. We have some tips to prepare your lawn for winter by utilizing our winter services:
1) Continue mowing schedule:
It is important to set a final mowing schedule and just give up close to the winter season. Some types of grass will thrive and grow in the cold temperatures, while other sensitive grasses will die out quickly if not watched or protected. It is best to keep the lawn at a consistent small height. This is especially true for really cold regions that see frequent snow. The small height will work to reduce the rate of diseases from fungus damage. It isn’t a bad idea to set a fixed two week mowing schedule unless otherwise needed.
2) Aeration:
This common lawn method can be used pretty much all year round and can be especially great for winter months. This process is simply used to open up the soil to make for a better environment regarding roots for grasses. This process is only done occasionally so that the roots actually have time to grow. The high pedestrian traffic crossing the lawn every day combined with all the roots, leaves, and dirt litter built up makes winter one of the best times to aerate. This is to clean the lawn up and keep the grass roots fresh.
3) Fertilization:
This is known as the conditioner for lawns. There are many different ways to approach fertilization winter services depending on lawn size, type of grass, and money willing to be spent. Some will just fertilize every couple of years, while others might fertilize every couple of months or every year. There are also different brands to consider. The fertilization can be done at any point of the year, but can be more beneficial during the harsh winters. In the spring the fertilizer will have a higher amount of nitrogen from the weed control and quick green. During the winter there will be less nitrogen and more potassium built up to help the weeds grow.
4) Leaves:
During the fall we see the greatest amount of leaves in our yard as they all fall. This can be really annoying to the owner of the residence, but even worse for the grass as all the leaves cover up the grass preventing access to nutrients and growth. There will have to be frequent raking sessions to get all the leaves off the lawn before the heart of winter. A lawn mover might not work as well considering it will just chop up the leaves and leave little pieces lying around.
5) Weed Control:
Weeds are just as harmful as they are unattractive to lawns. Some will grow tall and resist the chemicals making it harder than ever to control them. Pulling them from the roof seems to be the most effective way. The weeds are often always taking up the spotlight or sunlight in this case hurting grass growth. The glyphosate compound has been proven to be very effective in weed control since the plant takes it to the root.
