Plant of the Week – Castle Spire Holly

Castle Spire Holly

Here is a variety of blue holly that has a distinctive form, and compact growth.  Reaching 8-12′ tall and 3-4′ wide, it is a great plant for a location that needs some height.

It prefers partial to full sun, but protection from harsh winter wind and sun.  It can even tolerate some wet soils.

This holly will get red berries when a pollinator is planted.  Holly’s are dioecious, which means that the plant is either male or female, and needs the other to produce fruit.  The ‘Castle Spire’ cultivar is the female plant, and a male is needed to pollinate.  Plant ‘Castle wall’ as a pollinator.
