Plant of the Week – Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba, also known as the maidenhair tree, is a unique species of tree with no close living relatives. The ginkgo is a living fossil, very similar to fossils dating back 270 million years.  These trees can reach 60-100 feet tall, and are a long lived tree.
This beautiful tree has unique leaves, and a stunning yellow fall color.Ginkgo trees prefer a well drained soil, but do well in city conditions because they tolerate pollution and de-icing solutions.  If you buy a Ginkgo tree, be sure to buy a named variety, because female trees produce undesirable fruit that produces a noxious smell.  Named varieties are generally male.
