Plant of the Week – Forest Pansy Redbud

This striking tree is a cultivar of the native Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud).  Forest Pansy has deep purple foliage when it leafs out in the spring.  The leaves gradually fade to a deep green as the summer progresses, and is followed by yellow fall color.

Forest Pansy blooms in April with beautiful pink flowers lining the stems of the tree.

Trees do best in a moist, well-drained soil, and prefer to be sited in a partially shaded area.  They grow to a height of 15-25 feet and is usually as wide as it is tall.
